64. Notes From the Dog by Gary Paulsen

I really like this book. The main character, fourteen-year-old Finn, has made a goal to only speak with 12 people the whole summer. Talking to people is just too hard. Then he meets a new next door neighbor, Joanna, who hires him to make a garden in his own yard. She is housesitting a neighbor's house while she has chemo for breast cancer. It really does a good job of exploring the cancer experience and community. Finn and his friend Matthew help Joanna raise money for cancer awareness and along the way their lives change. They meet lots more than 12 people and Finn realizes that he does need people and what's more, that he is good with people. And he also sees that one person can make a difference in the lives of everyone around them.
